One of Kazakhstan's oldest grocery retail chains, Small, continues to expand its retail business by broadening its geographic presence, introducing new store formats, and developing its partnership with the international SPAR brand, Forbes Kazakhstan reports.
The first Small store opened in Almaty in 1999. Today, the chain operates in 16 cities across Kazakhstan and, according to the company, serves approximately 7.5 million customers every month.
Network Expansion and New Store Formats
The retailer's infrastructure includes more than 3,200 suppliers, 15 distribution centers, warehouse facilities covering a total area of 45,000 square meters, and its own central production kitchens. The company's assortment comprises around 40,000 product items.
In recent years, Small has been actively developing the Small Food concept, which combines a supermarket, a ready-to-eat food zone, a coffee shop, and seating areas for customers. The first stores under the new format opened in Almaty, with the concept later expanding to Astana and Pavlodar.
The company is also advancing its digital services. It is currently testing the Small Food mobile application, which is expected to provide customers with grocery delivery services in the future.
Expansion of the SPAR Network
Since 2022, Small has been developing the international SPAR chain in Kazakhstan under a licensed agreement to operate the brand.
The first Eurospar supermarket opened in Almaty in September 2022. Today, the network includes nine stores: six in Astana and three in Almaty. The most recent store opened in May 2026.
The company continues to develop various SPAR store formats while expanding the ассортимент of its private-label products.
Search for New Retail Locations
According to the official Small website, the company is actively exploring opportunities for further expansion and is seeking new retail properties for lease or purchase across different regions of Kazakhstan.
The development of new store formats, logistics infrastructure, and digital services reflects the ongoing transformation of Kazakhstan's grocery retail market and the efforts of major retailers to adapt to evolving consumer preferences.
