INFOLine: Kazakhstan’s retail infrastructure is showing growth while maintaining potential for retail development.
According to INFOLine, the total number of retail outlets in Kazakhstan exceeded 200,000 units at the beginning of 2026. Traditional markets continue to play a significant role in the structure of retail trade — today there are 626 such facilities in the country with a total area of about 7.5 million square meters. Of these, 64% are multifunctional, and 53% are located in indoor premises.
The organized retail segment continues to show positive dynamics. According to INFOLine’s database of the “340 largest retail chains in Kazakhstan” as of early 2026 there were 10.3 thousand modern chain stores in the country, which is 2.5 thousand more than a year earlier. Despite this active growth, the share of modern chain retail in the Republic remains relatively low, indicating significant potential for further market consolidation.
“The Kazakhstani retail market is currently undergoing an active transformation. On the one hand, we see a large-scale traditional segment — markets and non-chain retail; on the other, an accelerated development of modern formats. This gap creates significant growth potential for chain operators,” notes Ivan Fedyakov, founder of INFOLine.
The development of international players is also noteworthy. The Fix Price chain continues its steady expansion: by the end of 2025, it operated 392 stores in Kazakhstan, with an annual increase of 54 outlets. According to INFOLine, Fix Price has become the largest and fastest-growing non-food retail chain in Kazakhstan (excluding the pharmacy segment) by number of stores.
According to the company, as of the end of the first quarter of 2026, there are 400 Fix Price stores operating in the country: 388 are company-owned, while the rest operate under franchise agreements. The stores are located in all major cities of Kazakhstan as well as in rural areas — in total across 63 settlements. In 2026, the chain plans to expand by another 100 stores.

“The active expansion of chains like Fix Price shows that the Kazakhstani market remains one of the most attractive in the region for scaling. At the same time, key competition in the coming years will unfold not only around locations, but also around business model efficiency, logistics, and customer engagement,” Ivan Fedyakov believes.
Thus, INFOLine notes that Kazakhstan’s retail market is undergoing an active structural shift: while traditional retail remains dominant in scale, the role of modern formats is strengthening, and both international and local chains continue to expand their presence, setting new standards for competition and industry development.
